Re: What are Canada’s international moral obligations during a pandemic?
Dear [Sir or Madam],
In the midst of the pandemic, the Yazidi people in Northern Iraq are suffering worsening conditions. They need Canada’s help. Will you take action on their behalf?
[Your personal statement here]
In the aftermath of the 2014 genocidal attack by ISIS, hundreds of thousands of Yazidi fled their homes to escape. Eventually Iraq and the United Nations created refugee camps for them throughout Northern Iraq.
The International community joined forces and defeated ISIS by 2017/2018. Yazidi remained in the refugee camps while Iraq and the International community disagreed about how much it would cost to rebuild Sinjar.
In 2020, as Covid-19 spread across the world, the money for the refugee camps has dried up. The Yazidi have been pressured to leave the camps and go home. But, Sinjar is a land destroyed by ISIS. Infrastructure destroyed, no clean water, inadequate medical facilities, and hundreds of thousands of landmines planted by ISIS in an act of unfathomable hatred and genocide.
Now that winter is here, crisis conditions are escalating.
What steps will Canada take to help the Yazidi at this crucial time? It is my hope that Canada will take action immediately.
Thank you very much for your time. I await your response.
